Ladyland is a rhythmic collage where expressive depictions of womanhood collide. The piece remixes the text of Begum Rokeya’s iconic early 20th feminist fantasy Sultana’s Dream with images from early documentaries from the Films Division of India. During the postcolonial period, filmmakers constructed the image of the “modern Indian working woman”. More than half a century earlier, Begum Rokeya’s visions of a liberated woman with a scientific temperament weren’t that different. The piece invites the viewer to revel in the serendipity of these two feminist imaginaries, birthed across starkly different historical periods.
